Interesting questions to be asked as to why most China bulls end up being unpleasant in many ways. I follow a lot of the less tabloid chaps (Fishman, "Lei Gong", Glenn, the Gavekal lot) because it's worth not being in an echo chamber. For a group who claim to be unbiased, fair-minded, etc, often the dialogue seems to shade into triumphalism and fairly mean-spirited anti-Western sentiment.

Of course, China bears/analysts in general aren't immune to sniping on social media. I'm including myself here. And there's certainly more than the fair share of nutters and polemicists. But worth thinking about!

Cheers for the interesting comment. I think you're right, it has a lot to do with echo chambers in general, cultivating permissive arenas to push 'us v them'. Can find it across every social bubble.

I also think it has a lot to do with attention, which can be a powerful drug for some people. Especially for those who might not have had it much historically, or in their offline lives. Gaining it, reclaiming it, or riding it can manifest itself in bad ways.

I think I’ve enjoyed what’s been happening on RedNote over the last few days so much because there hasn’t been that “us vs them” animosity or atmosphere. It’s been lovely to see.

Yes, probably true. Doesn't help either that in general being a China specialist attracts oddballs for the reasons you mention.

Plus, defending a minority viewpoint makes one defensive!

Oh silly wyboy… the problem with this analysis is that you somehow think being an “award winning” analyst at a hoity toity investment bank quoted by broadsheets is *all that*.

I supposed it might appear so for those with their faces forever pressed against the window.

But I assure you, it’s nothing special. Rots the brain for those who stay too long. Just be happy your CV goes straight into the rubbish.

What is up with these losers? I think your third "fascination" is an interesting idea. Is there a similar thing with fowldy? Except he never actually had the success to know what it's like to lose ot

Tom for sure. All relative success. From his roots, to 90k rabid followers, being quoted by MoFA, Op-Eds, and being censored — back to obscurity, must've left a big hole, been a big emotional adjustment.
